16 to play, and I have no idea what this side is

- Kickoff
- 7:30 p.m. PT
- Venue
- Dignity Health Sports Park
Key takeaways
- Forty-two per cent of our goal involvement can't be picked tonight. Seventeen of forty goals and assists gone, Pec's nine of them off to Cruzeiro.
- Dallas are built at the back and lean on Musa going forward. He's got 13 in 15, and their goals are running about seven ahead of their chances, which usually corrects.
- Twenty-one points from eighteen, eleventh in the West, two off ninth with sixteen to play. The playoff maths is open, just.
Who to watch
Joseph Paintsil
LA Galaxy
Four goals and two assists in fourteen appearances, 1,113 minutes. He was the one getting in behind in San Jose, and with 42% of the Galaxy's goal involvement unavailable, running in behind is the thing I most want to see again.
The honest position, a few hours out: I can't read this one. The Galaxy have been crap since the World Cup break, and the games either side of it don't join up into anything I'd call form. I'm walking into a home game not knowing whether we're a playoff side in a rough patch or just a bad team, and that's a strange place to be in August.
Twenty-one points from eighteen, eleventh in the West, two off ninth with sixteen still to play. The playoff maths is open. That's about where the good news runs out.
There was a glimmer in San Jose. Decent first half, Paintsil kept getting in behind, and we nicked a point off the back of two very poor performances. It's something to build on, not proof of anything, but I'll take it.
Where the two sides stand
Us: 5W 6D 7L, last five W D L L D. A point a game at home, a shade better on the road. Nine games each side of that split, so read it as a lean, not a law.
Dallas come in sixth on 26 from seventeen. Both our recent runs need the same fat caveat: we went 55 days without a game across the break, Dallas 60. Neither "form" is a real sequence, and I'm holding all of it loosely.
What Dallas actually are
I'll be honest, I don't know a huge amount about them. The short version, and the numbers back it, is that they're defensively solid and lean heavily on Musa for goals. The edge is at the back, not in front of it, and they're happy to let you have the ball. Musa has 13 in 15, so the plan more or less announces itself.
One thing sits against them. They've scored 32 from around 25 expected, roughly seven more than their chances deserved. That's the kind of overperformance that usually corrects. It hasn't yet, and "usually" is doing a lot of work when it's your place they're turning up to tonight.
The bit I'll actually be watching
Two things. First, whether we get on the ball, because Dallas will happily hand it over and sit in. Second, and I'm less relaxed here, the back line.
Our defence can be flaky at the best of times, and it's been chopped and changed all year, centre-back especially. Six different shapes in eighteen games tells its own story. That's more an eye-test worry than a data one, but the last XI doesn't argue with it, and Yamane's now out with a hip. Whoever starts at centre-back needs a blinder to keep us in it. Against a side that funnels everything through one striker, that's about as literal a requirement as it sounds.
One pattern in our favour: we're a better team after the break. More threat in second halves than first, even as we see less of the ball. If there's a version of this Galaxy worth watching, it tends to turn up around the hour.
Still running on fumes
Forty-two per cent of our goal involvement this season belongs to players who can't be picked tonight. Seventeen of forty goals and assists, just gone.
Pec took five goals and four assists to Cruzeiro. Klauss and his five are out injured, Yamane's hip, Puig's knee, and a handful of others away or unavailable. Dallas are missing next to nothing by comparison. We start the night behind before anyone's kicked a ball.
One genuine upside: Kyogo Furuhashi is eligible. He's only just landed and I'd assume he doesn't start, but twenty minutes and a goal would do more for the mood than anything else on this list.
Paintsil is the one I want to see
Four goals and two assists in fourteen, and he was the one getting in behind in San Jose. With so much of our attack unavailable, someone stretching the last line is exactly what I want to see again, and right now he's the best bet we've got for it.
Unrelated, and no part of the analysis: I've fallen down a hole discovering he makes music, and the tunes are genuinely good. Anyway. Let's go Joe.
The call
Close to a coin flip, and I'll say 1-1. I'd love 2-1, and I'd be a bit surprised if we got it. That's standard fan optimism and I know exactly what it is.
The thing I keep coming back to is how little we actually know about this team. The post-break football has been a basket case, and any result feels on the table tonight. That's been true of the Galaxy for a couple of years now, the 2024 run aside, when we looked the best side going and I always fancied us to score.
One small disagreement with the pessimists on Marcinkowski: some of his numbers this year get read as papering over cracks. I don't see it that way. A chunk of it is a penalty save and a keeper in genuinely good form, and I'll carry that into tonight rather than fret about it.
What it comes down to is simple. We more or less have to take something here. Another loss leaves too much to do at the back end, and a flat performance turns the heat up on Vanney, which is the last thing we need mid-season. What I want tonight isn't complicated: a point, and ninety minutes that give me something to believe in for the run home, with reinforcements hopefully on the way.
